"The Ties That Bind" reflects how a person matures within a family or society. The spirally pebble and stone cord symbolizes expanding growth and development. At the same time, the cord serves as a boundary, something that ties one to accepted beliefs, values, customs, and behaviors of the group. The slightly bulging areas between the cords up and down the sculpture represent the pressure and stresses that builds until these can be accommodated, resolved or accepted.
