"The Ties That Bind" reflects how a person grows with a family or society. The spirally pebble and stone cord symbolizes expanding growth and development. At the same time, the cord serves as a boundary, something that ties one to accepted beliefs, values, customs, and behaviors of the group. As the individual matures and becomes more personally authentic, they will want to live according to their own ideas and norms. The slightly bulging areas between the cords up and down the sculpture represent the built up pressure and stress until these can be accommodated, resolved or accepted.
